Air distribution determines how effectively the outdoor air actually reaches the occupants and how well contaminants are removed from the space. When air is delivered to the occupied zone in the right pattern and velocity, it dilutes pollutants, carries them to exhaust, and keeps temperature and humidity more uniform. This directly ties to ventilation effectiveness—the real-world ability of the ventilation system to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). If air is poorly distributed, you get dead zones, short-circuiting of supply air, drafts, and less efficient contaminant removal, which degrades IAQ even if the same ventilation rate is maintained.

That is why improving air distribution is considered central to IAQ outcomes and ventilation performance. The other ideas—focusing only on acoustics, or claiming IAQ isn’t affected, or suggesting energy changes alone without IAQ implications—don’t capture the full impact of how air moves in the space.
